Burton Blind & Partially Sighted Club

Background

The Burton Blind & Partially Sighted Club is a Burton based charity which aims to give better the quality of life people with a visual disability. The group has been running since 1994 but the running costs involved in transporting members and the cost of activities have meant the group require extra funds.

How did the Community Fund help?

The Community Fund awarded £200 to help Burton Blind & Partially Sighted Club continue to enhance the social life and independence of the people they work with. The money will go towards the cost of entertainment such as trips to the theatre and meals.

Lynn Fleming, Secretary of Burton Blind & Partially Sighted Club, said: "We meet on a Tuesday afternoon at The Day Centre in Waterloo Street, Burton on Trent, where we have a chat, cup of tea and biscuits. We have a small raffle to keep funds going and once a month we go out locally for lunch. We also have entertainment, talks, bingo, quizzes, plant competitions and various other events throughout the year.

"We use Mobility Transport to bring people to the club who are not able to come on their own and this is the largest expense the club has to meet. So the donation from the University of Derby has been most gratefully received and goes towards keeping the club running, as to many of our members, this is the only way they can get out and socialise and try to maintain some independence."
