Spondon Cricket Club

Background

In April 2015, Spondon Cricket Club finished a major programme to reclaim 2000m² of uneven and derelict land, enabling them to increase their playing area and install new practice facilities. There had previously been a shortfall in available cricket practice facilities due to the club's popularity and role as the hub of girls and women's cricket in Derby.

How did the Community Fund help?

The Community Fund contributed £250 towards the cost of installing two new practice net cages, helping provide much-needed practice facilities at the club.

Kathleen Green, Honorary Secretary at Spondon Cricket Club, said: "Many thanks for choosing Spondon Cricket Club to receive a £250 award from the Derby University Community Fund, with additional funding now in place we are well on the way to reaching our target of the £3,500 we require to install new grass practice nets.

"As the only cricket club in the City of Derby actively supporting and providing cricket coaching and playing opportunities for girls and ladies, the lack of sufficient net practice space at Spondon Cricket Club has been inhibiting player development at all levels.

"Our club provides cricket opportunities for both boys and girls from the age of 5 years and the additional nets will have a major impact on the success of our development plan.

"With continued investment to add to and develop our excellent facilities the new practice nets will complete a two-year project supporting our plans to complete the pathway from girls to ladies cricket."
