The Disability Pay Gap

This is the first time the University has reported on its disability pay gap. As part of the new Inclusion strategy, the University took the decision to voluntarily report its disability pay gap. There are 2435 employees included in the calculations, of which 253 have a declared disability and 2182 have no declared disability.

Table 11: Disability Pay Gap, 2022

Pay Gap 2022
Mean 6.2%
Median 0.2%

Table 11 shows that the University has a mean disability pay gap of 6.2% and a median pay gap of 0.2%. The UK disability pay gap is 13.8% and this means the University compares favourably to the UK average (ONS, 2023).

Bonus Payments by Disability

There are fewer people with a declared disability who received a bonus payment. Table 12 shows that there are 7 (2.5%) people with a declared disability who received a bonus compared to 81 (3.5%) employees with no declared disability.

All Groups with Disabilities 2.5% 7
No Declared Disability 3.5% 81

Table 13 shows the mean and median bonus payment by disability and highlights a mean of 2.79% and median of 0%.

Hourly Pay

The University takes a nuanced approach to recording disability and enables its employees to self-select from a set category, providing a greater understanding of the conditions that employees are working with.

Table 14: Average Hourly Pay Rates by Disability, 2022

All Declared Disabilities Hourly Pay Difference in hourly pay to no Declared Disability
No Declared Disability £19.12
Deaf or serious hearing impairment £15.39 0.20
Specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia, dyspraxia or AD(H)D £19.61 -0.03
Other Type of Disability £18.46 0.03
Long standing illness or health condition e.g. cancer, diabetes, heart disease £19.48 -0.02
Two or More Impairments and/or Disabling Medical Conditions £16.65 0.13
Prefer Not To Say £17.44 0.09
Physical Impairment or Mobility Issues £20.66 -0.08
Mental health condition, such as depression, schizophrenia or anxiety disorder £14.21 0.26
General learning disability (such as Down's syndrome £14.96 0.22
Social/communication impairment e.g. an autistic spectrum disorder £15.89 0.17
Blindness or Serious Visual Impairment Uncorrected by Glasses £15.84 0.17
Mean Median
No Declared Disability £19.12 £17.28
All Groups with Disabilities £17.94 £17.25

Table 14 shows that the median pay of employees with disabilities is £17.25. In the UK, the median pay of people with one reported disability is £12.39, reducing to £12.16 for people with two reported disabling conditions (ONS, 2023). In this regard, employees working at the University with disabling conditions earn higher than the UK median.

There is a small difference between the average hourly pay for all employees with a declared disability and for employee with no declared disability of 0.06%. This means that there are examples where people with a declared disability earn more than the mean hourly rate of £19.12. For example, people with a physical impairment or mobility issues earn on average £20.66 per hour.

Pay Quartiles by Disability

Table 15 shows the distribution of pay by declared disability and no declared disability and highlights that there are employees with declared disabling conditions working across all pay quartiles.

In more detail, the distribution of disability through the quartiles is consistent, with relatively similar percentages of people with long standing illness or health conditions working in each quartile, for example.

It is interesting to note that the percentage of people who prefer not to say is highest in Quartile 2 and the lowest in Quartile 4. This suggests that people gain more confidence to declare their disability in higher paid roles and identifies areas of opportunity where the University may focus campaigns to encourage people to disclose.
