Mackenzie Sargeant

BSc (Hons) Zoology

MPhil in Science and Engineering

Zoology graduate, Mackenzie Sargeant, made a lasting impact at the Pitch Perfect competition with her innovative business idea, the Probiotic Bio Ball - a biodegradable solution designed to support coral restoration. Her ground-breaking concept earned her the title of the competition’s first female winner, breaking barriers and inspiring aspiring female scientists and entrepreneurs.

Beginning her studies

Mackenzie’s passion for marine conservation led her to pursue a BSc (Hons) in Zoology. The course offered her a deep dive into various facets of marine science, where she discovered her calling in ocean conservation and sustainable innovation.

During her undergraduate studies, Mackenzie embarked on a transformative trip to the Maldives, which solidified her passion for marine science. Immersing herself in vibrant coral reefs and engaging in field research offered unparalleled hands-on learning experiences that laid the foundation for her future endeavours.

“The experience was made even more special by sharing it with close friends who shared my passion for marine science. This experience solidified my passion for marine science and gave me invaluable field research skills. What made it particularly special was combining academic study with real-world exploration in one of the world's most biodiverse marine environments.”

Reflecting on her time at the university, Mackenzie emphasised how her journey at Derby has enhanced her expertise and professionalism.

“University shaped me both professionally and personally. I gained not just scientific knowledge but practical skills from field research to lab work. The experience taught me to think critically, solve problems, but most importantly helped me to identify my true passion for ocean conservation. These years gave me the confidence and expertise to pursue my goals in marine science.”

Pitch Perfect: The Probiotic Ball

As the first female winner of the prestigious Pitch Perfect competition in 2024, Mackenzie's innovative business idea captured the attention of judges and set her apart as a visionary in her field. Mackenzie’s journey exemplifies the transformative power of combining research with entrepreneurial ambition, supported by the university's resources and mentorship.

The Probiotic Bio Ball, is a biodegradable solution designed to support coral restoration by delivering targeted probiotics. Mackenzie's innovative approach addresses critical challenges facing coral reefs, which are vital to marine biodiversity but are increasingly threatened by environmental degradation. This idea, rooted in her master's research in coral probiotics, is a testament to her commitment to sustainability and scientific excellence.

From research to business

The idea for the Probiotic Bio Ball was originally designed to be a part of Mackenzie’s MPhil study in coral probiotics. The idea that this product could then become a business opened when Oliver Stonier came to an interactive session to explain about the Pitch Perfect competition. These sessions were open to all Environmental Sciences students. Participating in the University of Derby’s Ideas Club and engaging with enterprise sessions gave Mackenzie the confidence and tools to view her research as a viable business opportunity.

Speaking about the experience, Mackenzie said:

“The competition has really boosted my confidence. This area isn’t something I’m usually used to, but the help from Oliver and the panellists made it an amazing experience. It’s given me the confidence to do it again.”

Looking ahead

Mackenzie is currently studying an MPhil in Science and Engineering; her research is dedicated to investigating how probiotics could have a beneficial impact on coral health, specifically coral larvae settlement. Her passion lies in marine research and inspiring young women scientists who share her dedication to protecting ocean ecosystems.

Mackenzie is also focused on further developing her product and advancing her career. Her experiences in PitchPerfect and the Digital Impact Mentorship Competition have provided her with invaluable skills in public speaking, business strategy, and enterprise development.

“I aim to continue learning and improving my knowledge as I continue through my masters. Alongside this, hopefully building on this product/business idea so that it can one day become a reality and hopefully help coral reef restoration.”

Mackenzie is currently receiving support to develop and expand her business idea, with the Ascentant Accountancy team assisting in setting up the business. Additionally, Oliver Stonier from the University of Derby has been helping her refine her business plan and pitches for additional competitions, aiming to enhance Mackenzie's research and business growth.

Mackenzie’s achievements underscore the University of Derby’s commitment to fostering innovation and supporting students in realising their potential. Her success in transforming cutting-edge research into a promising business venture exemplifies how university-led initiatives can drive impactful change. Through her work, Mackenzie is not only contributing to coral reef conservation but also inspiring the next generation of scientists to think big and pursue their dreams.
