Ryan Plant

BA (Hons) Football Journalism

Class of 2019

Having graduated in 2019, Ryan secured a role at Two Circles, a digital data-driven sports agency. Ryan is currently on secondment at The Premier League where he plans and produces social media content across their channels. This has included leading on content plans for major milestones and campaigns, like the Fantasy Premier League and seasonal awards, such as No Room for Racism and the Hall of Fame.

University journey

Prior to joining the University, Ryan attended two open days where he explored the campus and participated in discussions and engaging activities.

"The course is incredibly varied. We had a taste of the different sides to being a journalist. We tried filming and presenting, podcasting, web design and audio creation."

Ryan believes that one of the benefits of studying Football Journalism is being able to focus specifically on football, which opens up a wide range of experiences, opportunities and contacts. Furthermore, the course developed his time management skills and ability to multitask to meet deadlines, which are essential for his role.

A student portrait

Naturally the social media modules in my second and third year developed a lot of the skills I rely on today. Smart, efficient and engaging copywriting is crucial for social media. I often create graphics and short videos, I have interviewed people, and I of course work to very strict deadlines.

Career journey

Ryan looks back at his three years at the University of Derby very fondly as he found the course and the city both enjoyable and rewarding. Ryan often comes back to campus to attend careers fairs alongside the Careers and Employment Services, participating in guest lectures and supporting current students.

Drawing on the practical experience gained during his studies, such as published work by Premier League clubs and newspapers including the Guardian, Ryan was able to shine in his role at Two Circles and take on more projects and initiatives.

In addition, by attending a mix of international and national events during his degree, such as the Women’s Euros in 2017 in the Netherlands and Under-17s Euros in the UK, Ryan further developed the knowledge and experience which he now applies in his role.

Current successes and future aspirations

Working on Premier League social media content is Ryan’s biggest highlight. He recommends to those who may be interested in a similar career to choose a specialist course as it offers the opportunity to work on more specific events with a variety of audiences.

Ryan’s future aspirations include working abroad as his love of travel could easily be combined with football journalism.
