Reflecting upon my university experience, I am most proud of graduating. The University was great at supporting me with my coursework by providing counselling and adjusting deadlines.

Advice for current students

Victoria advises students to take every opportunity they can, as she believes the value of university goes beyond the course.

“Universities offer so much, from part-time working, to volunteering, and societies. Have fun and make memories - I am still friends with my university pals. Also, apply for all the jobs that you can and don't be limited by the industry.”

The benefits of employing a graduate

As we are an applied university, businesses know that by employing one of our graduates they will be bringing new skills and a fresh perspective into their organisation. Through our focus on engaging with industry, our students and graduates are equipped with practical skills that enable them to hit the ground running in the workforce.

Because of this, Managing Director at PKF Smith Cooper Systems, Chris Smith, feels confident about employing graduates from the University of Derby.

At PKF Smith Cooper Systems, our focus is always on people. By nature, graduates are generally bright and intelligent people, so it’s obvious for us to tap into this market to find those with the right work ethic and enthusiasm to help our business, which allows us to help them take their first serious steps in the working world."

Although we are now very much a national company, we retain our head office in Derby and are fiercely proud of our roots in the City. By recruiting people from the University of Derby, we are both supporting a key institution in our city and acquiring people who understand our culture, can onboard quickly and immediately add value to our team.
