When I think of my time at Derby, I remember the incredible blend of learning and doing. The lectures, taught by professionals with diverse technical backgrounds, opened up worlds of knowledge beyond my field. The insights from their research and industry experiences made the learning so much richer as well as seeing real-life prototypes in the University’s labs.

A bridge into a new world: Lucideon

Katie’s passion for engineering wasn’t always on her radar. Coming from a background in English Literature and Psychology, she had no prior experience in the field. But the apprenticeship offered her a gateway into a new world.

“The apprenticeship has been my bridge into engineering, it allowed me to start my career sooner than the traditional route, providing both the theoretical knowledge and the hands-on skills I needed. The chance to work in a lab and see my learning in action has been invaluable.”

Katie's role at Lucideon, a materials science consultancy, has taken her into the heart of innovation. From developing materials for healthcare to working on ultra-high temperature materials for aerospace, Katie’s days are filled with research and development.

“Every day is an opportunity to create something new, whether it's formulating medicine or testing moon soil simulants, the work is challenging and incredibly rewarding.”

Overcoming challenges and recognising achievements

Of course, the path hasn’t been without its challenges. Juggling multiple projects with university commitments was daunting at first.

“Managing tight deadlines was tough, but over time, I’ve honed my prioritisation and communication skills. Learning to balance everything has been a crucial part of my growth.”

Despite the challenges, Katie’s achievements have been remarkable. She’s proud of her nomination for the West Midlands ‘Rising Star’ award and the case studies she’s authored for the AMRICC centre. These milestones reflect her dedication and the impact of her work.
