Never give up on your dreams of becoming a nurse: Rachael's Journey

Nursing apprentice Rachael Bullivant shares her journey through some of the hardest times of her life but never giving up and achieving her dreams.

Gaining real world experience

Rachael’s journey at Derby significantly shaped who she is today. The FdSc Nursing Associate course offered her invaluable experience and insights.

"The lecturers brought a wealth of knowledge backed by theory and real-world experience," she says.

Despite each lecturer having a unique teaching style, the consistent open-door support from day one was reassuring. This supportive and caring approach has influenced how she now treats her colleagues and patients, fostering an environment of empathy and understanding.

When reflecting on her time at the University of Derby, Rachael reminisced the first time she walked into the Atrium.

"The vibrant atmosphere filled me with excitement and anticipation for the future”.

It quickly became clear to her that Derby was more than just a place for academic success—it was a nurturing environment designed to foster personal growth.

The hustle and bustle of the pop-up stands for the unions and communities you can join made the University feel like they cared, not just for my success on my course but also my personal growth too.

Overcoming personal and professional hurdles

Rachael's academic journey at Derby has been a rollercoaster. Initially, she started the Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship MSc in 2021 but facing personal challenges her life took her down a different path.  The unexpected loss of a close family member meant she needed to take responsibility for the management of her family business.

"Even though I had support from the course leader and the apprenticeship team, I found it hard to manage the workload and the academic studies, I thought my dreams of becoming a nurse were over.”

However, the opportunity to join the training Nurse Associate course rekindled these dreams. This ensured she had the ability to balance a nursing role and management of her family business.

"It was extremely difficult at times, managing two full-time jobs, university, placements, and assignments, but it was definitely worth it," she says.

During her studies, Rachael completed placements in both hospital and community settings, which were integral to her professional growth.

"This exposure to different specialties helped me maintain an open mind about how various departments work within the hospital," she explains.

The placements enhanced her communication skills and broadened her perspective, which has been crucial in her current role as a registered nurse at the Royal Derby Hospital.

Making a positive impact on people's lives

Since securing a position at Royal Derby Hospital, Rachael describes her greatest success as growing in confidence to practice independently, which has been crucial in her current role as a registered nurse.

Her role involves attending to patients' individual and ensuring their care plans - agreed upon with doctors - are fulfilled.

"I now finish my day feeling that I have made a positive impact on patients' lives."

The skills and behaviours Rachael gained during her degree have been immensely beneficial in her role.

"The course provided a well-rounded approach, blending theory and practical sessions”.

A particularly memorable module was medicines management, where she learned the 'Rights of Administration.' She fondly recalls,

"I still think about our lecturer Mandy when applying those principles."

The combination of theoretical learning and practical application on the ward significantly boosted her confidence as a Nurse Associate.

Taking the plunge

For students aspiring to work in nursing, Rachael offers encouraging advice:

"Take the plunge and jump straight in!"

She admits to feeling nervous about being a mature student but emphasises the supportive environment at Derby. "The diverse student body and approachable lecturers made me feel at ease,".

She also highlights the University's resources, such as the library's academic skills enhancement opportunities and the wellbeing service, which helped her discover she has dyslexia.

"Don’t let self-doubt hold you back. If you have a passion for nursing and making a positive impact on people's lives, this is the course for you.”

Looking ahead, Rachael plans to continue her studies at Derby, aiming for a top-up to become a Registered Nurse. Rachael is eager to advance her career and continue making a difference in patients' lives. Her journey reflects the importance of dedication and self belief, and she cannot wait to come back to the University of Derby.

The experience I had last time with the university has made me want to come back.
