"Taking small steps helps in persevering, and the unwavering support from loved ones back home makes all the difference."

He believes that establishing a routine, making new friends, and exploring new surroundings are key to settling in.

"Taking the time to meet new people and embrace the city was essential in helping me settle in. Within just a few weeks, what once felt unfamiliar started to feel like home."

James is particularly proud of how far he has come in his academic journey. Initially, he struggled with certain subjects, but through perseverance, he has significantly improved his understanding. 

"There were areas I was fearful of, but over time, I’ve managed to overcome these challenges. I’m incredibly proud of my progress, especially knowing that these subjects were once my weak spots."

This transformation has helped James build resilience and a mindset focused on continuous improvement.

Time management is the key to success

James emphasises that balancing university assignments with company responsibilities can feel overwhelming, but effective time management is the secret to thriving in an apprenticeship. "Managing time well also allows for a work-life balance—something crucial for mental well-being and long-term success. Making time for family, friends, and relaxation is essential!"

James advises that prioritising tasks, setting realistic goals, and staying disciplined are essential habits that help apprentices meet deadlines without compromising personal time.

When it comes to excelling in a role, James believes that every skill and piece of knowledge gained throughout an apprenticeship proves valuable. While specialisation is a long-term goal, having a broad understanding of the industry is incredibly beneficial.

"Specialising is important, but having a good understanding of your sector is key for smooth communication and collaboration across teams."

Whether it’s technical expertise, industry awareness, or interpersonal skills, James expresses that every lesson learned contributes to workplace effectiveness.

For those considering an apprenticeship, James’s biggest piece of advice is to take the leap. He acknowledges that many never imagine they will land in their desired roles, as competition is fierce, but stepping forward and applying is the best decision they can make.

"Don’t be afraid to apply! Apprenticeships are competitive, but taking the leap was the best decision I made. If it’s a role or industry you’re passionate about, don’t hold back. And if you fail, see it as an opportunity to learn and grow."

Before applying, James advises taking the time to research the company, understanding their values, and aligning with their ethos. Gaining relevant experience - whether through mentorship, internships, or work placements—can also provide a competitive edge.
