Midwives are autonomous practitioners and the lead professional for the care and support of pregnant people, newborn infants and their families throughout pregnancy and the continuum. They provide care based on the best available evidence and keep up to date with current knowledge and skills, thereby helping to ensure that their care is responsive to emerging evidence and future developments.
This programme has been developed in line with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC, 2019, 2023), the Institute for Apprenticeship and Technical Education (IFATE, 2020) standards for Midwifery practice and the Quality Assuring Higher Education in Apprenticeships (QAA, 2018).
Apprenticeship Programme Aims
This programme will expose apprentices to a wide variety of practice learning environments including maternity wards, neonatal units and community midwifery teams. There are a range of interprofessional learning (IPL) activities throughout the program which will take place in practice environments working alongside colleagues from different disciplines. There are also IPL opportunities within the academic setting, where apprentices will engage in scheduled IPL activities and so they can learn from, with and about each other to contribute to effective team working in a health and social care context.
The Midwifery Degree Apprenticeship programme is a full time three-year undergraduate program designed in line with the NMC Standards of Proficiency for Midwives (NMC, 2019).
The modules provide the foundation for Apprentices to develop compassionate professionalism whereby they can be trusted in the care they provide. Apprentices will develop the skills, knowledge, values and competency that registered midwives need to support, and care for pregnant people, infants, families and the community.
Apprentices complete a range of core modules to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours that are needed to support and care for pregnant and birthing people, infants and families in all fields of Midwifery practice.

How you will learn
Apprentices will have a combination of theory and practice experiences throughout their programme. To support the application of theory to practice, consolidation of practice learning in the clinical skills environment will also be used to support learning and prepare apprentices for practice. This is achieved by providing a safe environment where alternative courses of action can be explored, tried and tested.
Learning will be facilitated through a range of classroom-based activities, skills laboratories and by electronic means such as online learning and web-based training. Apprentices will be expected to evaluate and act in the same way as they would in a ‘real life’ situation, thereby learning is supported in a safe environment and can be used to augment and enhance practice learning experiences.
