Course description

This apprenticeship has been developed in conjunction with Trusts across Derby and Derbyshire Integrated Care System and in consultation with independent healthcare providers.  The provision has been specifically designed to meet employer and future workforce needs, with a delivery model that best supports service delivery.

This programme provides an opportunity for students from a range of backgrounds to study a professional programme leading to the opportunity to apply for registration as a Physiotherapist. This programme utilises the wealth of experience gained by the long-standing Allied Health Professional and apprenticeship educational provision at the University of Derby. Strong links with practice are integral to the programme, from design and development to practice learning as well as wider aspects of programme delivery and research-informed teaching, enabling the subject area to keep abreast of, and proactively respond to changing needs.

The BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy programme is 36 months in duration followed by an integrated End Point Assessment.  The programme will provide students with an applied learning experience that has a strong rehabilitation focus throughout. Student’s off the job learning will comprise a mixture of taught University education, resources and activities provided through the online learning environment, work-based learning and practice (placement) learning.

This programme is developed to align to the Health and Care Professions Council Standards of Proficiency for Physiotherapy and the Apprenticeship Standard ST0519 for Physiotherapists. In line with this standard, this programme will provide theoretical and clinical knowledge, skills and behaviours for students to work in the role as a Physiotherapist.

Learning takes place both on campus at the university and in the workplace and uses work-based activities and scenarios to inform and evidence that learning has taken place.  A minimum of 20% off the learning will take place off the job, for example in seminars and clinical skills environments.  A blended approach to learning is employed with weekly teaching and learning provided (except for scheduled holidays).  On-campus learning as part of off the job learning will be scheduled at regular interval throughout the programme, a minimum of one month apart.   A greater proportion of on-campus learning will be provided in level 4, tapering slightly in levels 5 and 6.

The programme aligns to the four pillars of practice with each module identifying the relative focus across clinical practice, leadership, education and research.  The programme is designed to develop professional competence and enable graduates to respond to, adapt to, and compete within the dynamic nature of technological and societal change.
