Advice for a first year student

Looking back at my university experience, there are a number of things I would’ve approached differently. Having reached my half way point at university, a period of reflection has dawned on me. Looking back, I’ve definitely adjusted how I’ve began my second year compared to my first, but there are definitely a few cringe worthy moments I could’ve lived without! If you’re in your first year at university or are finishing up your A-levels, listen up!

University is what you make of it

You can turn up everyday, come in for extra or you can cheat. Top tip: Don’t cheat. You will miss out majorly, whether that’s in study or the funny moments from a lecture. Try and make the most out of what university has to offer! Even if that does mean an early start to get to athletics club – there are some things you may never get to experience again.

Do not feel guilty for having fun

As long as you’ve organised your time, don’t feel as though you have to miss out on the good stuff right now. Go out for meals, binge watch Harry Potter with your mates, order a pizza, stay out till 4am – just don’t make a habit of it! You have the time at university to enjoy yourself!

University will test relationships

Whether it’s a partner, family, or friendships, the distance will be a big tester! Whoever it may be, you’ll find that both parties will need to make the effort. In most cases, the heart will grow fonder and you’ll find yourself appreciating your home life a lot more. However, never forget the power of social media; a Skype call is only a click away.

Don’t fall into traps

You may find the school nature of forming ‘cliques’ attempting to make a reappearance at university. Fitting in is one of the most daunting things about starting a new experience, and temptation to try and change your persona can be high. Always try to be yourself and anyone that wants to be part of your life will naturally gravitate towards you.

First year does count

Ok, maybe dependent on your course. But in terms of living your life, make the most out of it! You’ll find yourself doing things you never imagined. Go ahead and watch trashy videos over and over again, do an all nighter, hang out with friends you may never see after uni. Don’t sweat over the small stuff just enjoy it because the time zooms by!
