Gaining industry experience while you study

In November 2023, I found myself dreading the fact that, as an international student with visa restrictions, I couldn't opt for a placement year. That was until I discovered an opportunity within the university – which, though short-term, provided just enough experience to make up for that gap. I can confidently say that I gained invaluable experience and achieved something truly fulfilling!

What is On Campus Internship Scheme (OCIS)?

OCIS is a short-term opportunity, typically lasting a few weeks to a couple of months, that allows students to gain experience in various roles within the university. Vacancies are usually posted on the university careers website, and you may receive email job alerts if you're subscribed. These opportunities typically become available between late November and early January, though this is subject to change.

Who can apply for OCIS?

Most OCIS roles are primarily aimed at students in their second or penultimate year. However, some roles make exceptions for students with less work experience who are eager to take advantage of opportunities available at the university.

What do I need to prepare for?

The most likely scenario is preparing for an assessment centre within the university. The details may vary depending on what the recruitment team has planned for you, but don't worry—they will inform you in advance about what to prepare. You may also have a short interview focused on the role you're applying for.

Would I recommend OCIS?

Absolutely! Not only will it be a great addition to your CV, but you'll also gain valuable experience. Plus, it can be an opportunity to explore potential career paths as you progress.

Speaking from Experience

What role did I take on? I applied for the Fairtrade Audit Preparation role. I really enjoyed it! The role was a mix of on-campus and remote work, which suited me well as it allowed me to balance other commitments while participating in OCIS. My tasks included conducting research and tapping into my creative side by brainstorming event ideas that could support the committee in future initiatives.

One highlight I’d love to share is that I created a Fairtrade-themed card game from scratch! Designing the visuals and developing the rules wasn't easy, but it was incredibly fun and rewarding!

What advice would you give to future students?

You’ll probably heard this from your wonderful tutors, but I'll say it again—never leave your opportunities until the last minute. If you’re planning to explore these opportunities only in your final year, you’re missing out!

Once an opportunity passes, it’s gone. If you think you can do it, go for it! Stepping out of your comfort zone is a brave move, and as they say, it’s only scary the first time. Fear and self-doubt are normal—just do it scared! Opportunities like OCIS can bring out your potential, helping to develop your skills and personality. So, get those applications going!
