The Widening Participation team has a variety of evidence-informed in-school and on-site workshops and Experience Days to support your students. All activities have been matched to the Gatsby Benchmarks and many can be adapted around your school timetable. Events at the University

Date: Negotiable

Year groups: 12-13 and Access students

Location: Derby or Chesterfield campus

Length of session: Negotiable

Description: Bring your post-16 students to the University to learn more about student life and tour the campus. The following 'activities in schools’ can be delivered as part of an Information Day allowing you to build the day that best suits your students.

Length of session: Full day

Description: These events focus on equipping students with the necessary independent learning skills for their current and future studies. Throughout the day we will focus on reflective thinking and metacognition as we encourage your learners to develop their academic skills, underpinning their knowledge of their existing thought processes and preparation for higher-level learning.

Description: For students participating in the Extended Project Qualification, this event features workshops on presentation skills and how to use our library for research.

Description: The library team welcomes you to explore the vast resources available in our academic library by way of tour, quiz, escape room, individual research, or workshops looking at using different sources and source reliability.

There are lots of opportunities for students to explore our campus, in addition to school and college visits.

Your students can attend an Open Day to get a feel for the city and campus, meet our staff experts, tour our first-class facilities and our award-winning accommodation. To get a taste of what your students can expect at a University of Derby Open Day, take a look at the best bits from our event in July.

They can also book one of our Campus Tours, where they can take a guided tour of our campuses and visit our accommodation.

Description: Each day provides students with the opportunities to get job-ready or help them find their future pathway. Students will be able to take part in: 

  • A range of masterclasses and workshops delivered by experts
  • A variety of 'Careers in...' workshops, which will highlight the pathways in a variety of careers
  • An employer showcase with leading employers on hand to talk through opportunities for work experience and internships.

Description: Students with experience of care - and their carers - are invited for a personalised visit to the University. On the day students will find out more about the additional support available as a care-experienced student, meet current students and engage in interactive taster sessions.

Length of session: 1 hour

Description: We can deliver information, advice, and guidance talks virtually, in-person, or as pre-recorded content for your students to access at a time to suit them. We cover a range of topics, including: 

  • Personal statements: stand out from the crowd
  • How to choose: how to navigate the digital university search
  • Is university for me?
  • Student Finance: all you need to know
  • University survival: what happens once you've applied

'Careers in...' talks

Are your students passionate about a subject, but don't know what their future career could look like? If so, we invite you to hear from our academic experts and current students, who will discuss the exciting careers on offer within the industry, and share their experiences studying and working in their chosen field.

'Making it Real' subject events

We have developed a suite of on-campus, virtual and on-demand events and activities for you to choose from, giving you the opportunity to sculpt a package of activities that best suit the needs of your students.

These activities will open your students' eyes to how they can 'Make it Real' - from taster sessions in first-class facilities, meeting current students and successful alumni, to working on projects applying their knowledge to real-world challenges.

Length of session: 1.5/2 hours

Description: This workshop focuses on preparing students for their transition into HE. Throughout the session, students will focus on what to expect from their university experience (especially in their first few weeks) and the knowledge needed to be successful, with a particular emphasis on budgeting, goal setting and skill sets.
