Tyra, International Relations and Diplomacy student, video transcript

Hi I'm Tyra Tucker and I'm a second-year International Relations and Diplomacy student at the University of Derby. The course I'm studying is quite unique because a lot of universities offer International Relations, but they don't offer International Relations and Diplomacy. But the University of Derby does, so it's great because I have a lot of modules that are tailored towards Diplomacy. And as well, we get to get our on hands experience.

So we got to go to the United Nations in Geneva, and we also got to visit different embassies and also meet with the Honduran ambassador. And that was a really amazing experience, so I definitely feel I'm ready to go out there and to try new things in my field and I feel more confident. And now I have experience as well so it's great. Teaching and learning experience on the course is quite different.

We get our tutorials, then we get reading materials. So we read up on them and then we all show up to our tutorials ready to discuss it, and it really helps you get out of your comfort zone. You get to hear different opinions and ideas. And as well I think it's just something that really helps you get more work ready, for when you do enter the field of Diplomacy or International Relations, and you have to express your ideas and your thoughts.

My experience at Derby so far has exceeded beyond my expectation. I remember coming here during the Open Day and meeting with lecturers and speaking about modules and I was really intrigued. And then now, being a student on my second year it has been a phenomenal experience.

I've met amazing people, I adore my lecturers and I feel like I'm getting ready for work experience and ready to go out there and chase my dreams. As an international student, my experience has been very welcoming.

Obviously coming from abroad in United States to Derby, it was quite daunting. You don't really know what to expect, but right when I arrived here, even though I did live here for a year prior, I felt so welcomed by everyone by the staff. And there's a really strong international community as well, and people come from all around the world so Spain, Italy, Latvia, Croatia, many many countries. So you also get to meet new Internationals, and you never really feel alone.

Anyone thinking to study this course at the University of Derby, I definitely encourage them to. I know I've changed completely as a person and I feel that my writing skills have developed, my communication skills have developed. And overall I feel like a better student not only that but a better person because the people around you are so positive. And they really want to see you grow and become better so definitely come to Derby get a feel for it during the Open Day and if you like it then hope to see you here!
