Inaugural lecture: Professor Andy Pringle

Professor Andy Pringle will discuss the importance of the key design characteristics for the impact and implementation of physical activity interventions. By examining these elements across the lifespan of interventions, Andy highlights how they can help individuals not only add years to life but also enhance the quality of those years. Despite the well-documented benefits of physical activity, inactivity remains a pressing global public health issue. Increasing participation in physical activity is a priority, and Andy's work offers valuable insights into how to achieve this.

Drawing on his extensive research from various national evaluations, policy contributions, and advocacy efforts, Andy will dissect the key design characteristics that serve as the foundational elements for creating environments that encourage physical activity. He will discuss what works, why it works, and how to implement these strategies effectively, as well as identify what may be less effective.

As a member of the UK Chief Medical Officers' guidelines group, Andy will also explore the role of healthcare professionals in promoting physical activity, the challenges they face, and how messaging around physical activity can be optimized. In light of the call for bold action on inactivity, he will discuss the role of football community trusts in supporting physical activity and health.
