Dr Maz Idriss - Male Victims of Honour-Based Abuse and Forced Marriages

Dr Maz Idriss is Senior Lecturer and LLM Programme Director at Manchester Metropolitan University, and his research (spanning 19 years) focuses on violence against women and men in South-Asian communities, including HBA and forced marriages.

He has published widely in a number of academic journals and has written for the Criminal Law Review, Journal of Criminal Law, Journal of Social Welfare and Family Law, Journal of Interpersonal Violence and the International Journal of Comparative and Applied Criminal Justice. He has also published two edited books on this subject and was awarded his PhD in 2018, where he interviewed 38 survivors and key agents involved in HBA and forced marriages as part of his research.

Dr. Maz's presentation will discuss the similarities and differences between women's and men's abuse in HBA and forced marriage cases, the invisibalisation of male HBA and forced marriage victims, and the need to better recognise male victims and offer appropriate support for men at community and state-policy levels.

Maz will also discuss the launch of his recent Report on HBA and the Courts, where he looks at reforms to improve prosecution and conviction rates in this area, as well policy developments and strategies concerning male victims.
