Nuclear Workshop – developing a roadmap for skills in the East Midlands

Monday 28 April 2025, 9:30am - 3pm

Session overview

The Nuclear sector is booming in the East Midlands, but with 35% of the current workforce over the age of 50, plus the government’s agenda to grow Nuclear in the UK and create 40,000 jobs by 2030, a clear skills strategy is required to develop a new and existing workforce to meet the future demands for sustainable growth. Through the East Midlands Investment Zone (EMIZ), linked to the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA), the University of Derby is leading on a piece of work to develop a Nuclear Skills roadmap for the region.  This complements work undertaken by the University of Nottingham on behalf of EMIZ examining the innovation roadmap for Nuclear.

In support of this work, we wish to invite you to contribute to this Nuclear Skills Workshop to help formulate a roadmap to address the known skills gaps around Nuclear. As a subject matter expert and/or practitioner in the field, this is a key opportunity for you contribute to:

  1. Identifying the skills base already in the EMCCA region;
  2. Exploring the skills required in the future to meet the growth of the nuclear sector and achieve the ambitions of the East Midlands economic development; and
  3. Discuss potential shortfall in skills areas.

This event will bring key employers and the wider supply chain, together with other organisations (both public and private) involved in the Nuclear Sector.

In preparation for the meeting, please give thought to the following aspects:

We look forward to your contribution and input into developing the road map for nuclear skills for the East Midlands.
