Why choose Halls? A local student’s guide to embracing university life video transcript

But before you commit, have a look at what maintenance loan you're entitled to.
Derby has a lot of things that I don't have at home, like there's places that you can go out.
There's lots of nice places to eat, places to drink, like things that you can do with your friends.
Phoebe, Forensic Science student:
So in halls, we have a lot of different events that happen, and most of them are free as well.
And it just means that you get to meet people of different mindsets, different religions from all over the world.
I like living in halls because, of all the communal areas that there are.
I've met a lot of current friends there.  I would not have met any of these people if I hadn't moved into halls, and I wouldn't have immersed myself within university life.
Having group work and living near halls is really convenient because it means that I'm not restricted, so when I have to be in and out of uni and also there are society events that go on late in the evening.
It's nice being able to go out to those and not having to worry about leaving early and being excluded from group activities afterwards.
Living in halls allows me to make sure I get to my lectures either on time or early, which really helps me engage with my course and content.
So commuting would have meant me travelling for two hours, and I could spend that time studying instead.
And also living in halls means that I have that independence for when I go into the world of work. I know what it's like to live alone.
It's not having to get up hours earlier to catch the train to get to uni.
Having a two-minute commute is just very convenient.
Hollie, Zoology student:
I like living in halls because it promotes independence, and the only way I could get my independence is going into a uni accommodation because it teaches you how to look after yourself and live on your own.
This is now my home.
