Environmental Management in halls of residence

Student Living (Derby Student Residences Ltd) is committed to reducing its impact on the environment and addressing environmental challenges for a more sustainable future.

Award-winning environmental management

We are delighted to once again be the GSLI winner of the Best Environmental Management Award 2024 for student accommodation in the UK and Ireland. Providing sector-leading, environmentally friendly services remains a key priority for us and it is pleasing to see this recognised by the students. Like the University, we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint however we can.

We set green targets, use environmentally friendly cleaning products, support recycling and charity initiatives and choose environmentally friendly options where possible. We recently added electric charging points to some of our residence car parks and replaced our petrol van with an electric one. During key times of the year when students are moving in and moving out, we provide additional recycling facilities to discourage waste. We encourage active travel, in particular cycling and we offer free bike storage at all our halls.

Charity collections and donations

All our halls have British Heart Foundation (BHF) donation bins for unwanted clothes and bric-a-brac that you can donate throughout the year. In addition, we run an end-of-year Moving Out campaign with the BHF, where we collect unwanted items for charity and save them from going to landfill.

Our events programme often includes hosting pop-up shops for local and national charities selling second-hand goods. At the end of the academic year, we also collect all unwanted, non-perishable, unopened food items from flats and donate them to local charities.

Green events

We are planning to introduce more 'green' activities into our Residence Life programme. Events like this 'bug hotel' building workshop which aims to support biodiversity.

Recycling

Please use the containers or bags in your kitchen for mixed recyclables including plastic, card, paper, polythene and food and drinks containers. Also, remember to make sure that there is no leftover food or liquid inside your recycling waste. When bags/boxes are full, please empty them in the recycling bins outside.

All our halls also have a battery recycling point, either in the common rooms or near the Hall Manager's office.
