Accessible and inclusive sport

We are committed to helping students get involved in sport and activity during their time at University. We can support you to get involved with a network of local clubs and facility providers if you have a disability long-term mental or physical health condition, or accessibility needs.

Derby Bucks Mixed Ability Rugby offers senior rugby for men, providing disabled and non-disabled players of all experience levels the opportunity to play contact rugby together. 

Training is on Friday evenings at 6:30pm at Derby Rugby Club.

Price: The first three sessions free, then a seasonal subscription of approximately £15 per month (which includes all training and match fees).

Paracycling taster sessions for people with visual impairments are available on Saturdays every two weeks, from 12:00pm to 2:00pm at Derby Arena. Tandem bikes are provided with pilots to assist.

The Arena can also support individuals with physical disabilities to ride the track if they are able to ride a standard bike.

Scropton Horse Centre provides horse riding opportunities for disabled people. 

Riding activities are accessible to a wide range of disabilities; physical, learning and sensory. Whether you are looking for a therapy ride and all the learning and social opportunities that go with that, or you are a para-equestrian hopeful with future sporting ambitions, the Centre aims to provide riders with all the support required.

Midland Canoe Club provides accessible kayaking opportunities for interested paddlers and is fully supportive of people with mobility issues. 

The club has a floating pontoon with a disabled access kayak launch facility and a pontoon mounted patient hoist for wheelchair users.

Derby County Community Trust provide a number of opportunities for adult players with disabilities.

Derby Shooters Pan Disability Football sessions (for the over 16s) run on Mondays at the Racecourse Playing Fields, Derby. If you are interested in taking part please ensure you complete the booking form.

There is also CP Football training for individuals (up to 18 years) living with Cerebral Palsy that runs on Saturday mornings at Belper Leisure Centre.

A variety of accessible sessions are available at Moorways Sports Village, including:

  • disabled swim
  • adult quiet swim
  • ladies only swim
  • Good Boost (water rehabilitation sessions for musculoskeletal and neurological conditions).

The 50m pool divides into three sections, and has an inbuilt access lift and steps. There is also a Pool Pod providing independent entry/egress. An ‘Easyroller’ plastic wheelchair and hoist are also available.

Moorways Sports Village Gym facility contains some adapted resistance equipment in addition to cardio, free weights and Olympic racks. There is also instructor support available for those who may require additional guidance. 

The gym is open 6am to 10pm Monday to Friday, and 7am to 6:30pm on Saturday and Sunday.

The University of Derby Gym facility, located within our Sports Centre at Kedleston Road campus provides a full range of cardio, resistance equipment and free weights. There are one-to-one personal inductions available for individuals who may feel their disability or accessibility issue is a barrier.

There is disabled parking, access ramp and lift provision, as well as dedicated changing facilities for wheelchair users. 

The gym is open 6:30am to 10pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday.
