Studying from Kenya proved no barrier for UDOL army student

University of Derby Online Learning (UDOL) graduate, Lieutenant Corporal Charlotte Miller, has used online studying as a platform to develop her career.

Charlotte will graduate today (January 14) at the University of Derby Awards Ceremonies, with a Master’s degree (MSc) in Environmental Health, which she studied remotely while working as an Environmental Health Technician in the British Army.

In her Army role Charlotte helps reduce disease and non-battle injuries, working in some of the most challenging situations all around the world.

Charlotte said: “This year I have been deployed to both Belize and Kenya. I assess environmental, industrial and domestic health hazards, inspect military kitchens and bases, investigate outbreaks of disease, conduct environmental and occupational health surveys and advise commanders.

“Now I have completed my Master’s degree, I am one step closer to being awarded the Environmental Health Registration Board’s Certificate of Registration and becoming a fully qualified Environmental Health Practitioner. I feel extremely proud to have graduated, it's a great feeling of achievement and accomplishment.”

Alan Whitfield, Senior Lecturer in Environmental Health with UDOL at the University, added: “The flexibility and support provided by the team allowed Charlotte to study whilst undertaking her military commitments, including a stint in Kenya and at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

“Charlotte was a hardworking and diligent student who deserved to pass her degree, and she has the dedication and personal attributes to now go on and make a long term career as an Environmental Health Practitioner.”

This week (January 14 to 16) around 3,400 graduates who studied at the University of Derby's seven Colleges – covering education, health and social care, business, life and natural sciences, engineering and technology, the arts; and law, humanities and social sciences – and almost 12,000 family, friends and other guests will attend three days of Awards Ceremonies at the new Derby Arena, in Pride Park, Derby.
