University encourages engineers to study on the job

The University of Derby hosted an open evening for prospective engineering and technology students and employees at its Markeaton Street site on Thursday March 26, 2015.

Prospective students and employees attended the evening to find out more about part-time day release courses offered by the College of Engineering and Technology at Derby. Day release courses are accredited programmes available to study part-time in September 2015 and January 2016.

Local businesses attended the evening to encourage their staff to study with the University of Derby.

Andrew Parsons, Section Manager for Training and Development at Toyota who spoke at the event, said: "The University of Derby's part-time degree programmes are an effective way for Toyota Manufacturing UK to develop our existing employee's capability and organisational level whilst retaining them within the business. The practical, work-based approach of these programmes also enables the learner to rapidly apply new found knowledge to their new roles."

Mick Harlow, Technical Director at E&P Rail was amongst them. He added: "I was most impressed by the facilities at Markeaton Street and it dotted the i's and crossed the t's for our young engineers. As a result of attending the open evening, we will certainly be putting forward candidates."

All courses have been designed to provide maximum flexibility for the employers and their employees. The courses also offer smooth progression routes to higher levels, from foundation degrees and honour degrees through to master level programmes.
