Clearing 2016: Vice-Chancellor warns spaces are filling up fast at University of Derby

Students hoping to start university in Derby this September, who don’t already have a place, are being urged to pre-register for Clearing in advance of A-level results day.

A record number of students will be accepted onto courses across the UK this year as there is no longer a cap on student numbers.

The University of Derby is expecting many of its courses to have limited places, so is urging students who are interested in Derby to sign up early and beat the rush when Clearing opens across the country on results day on August 18.

Professor Kathryn Mitchell, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Derby, said: “Entering Clearing isn’t just for those who didn’t get the results they expected, but supports individuals who have a last minute change of heart on the subject they wish to study at university or who have achieved higher grades than they expected and want to ‘trade up’.

“At Derby our philosophy is simple. What we teach and the way we teach it has one purpose – to enable people to realise their potential. Our focus on real-world learning gives people all the professional and transferable skills they need for a great career, which is why 96% of our graduates are in work or further study within just six months of graduating, making us number one in the East Midlands.”

Potential students wanting to get ahead of the game and register for Clearing should go to www.derby.ac.uk/clearing and enter their contact details. This will save time as there will be no need to phone around on results day and will reduce the pressure and stress of the day.

The University will contact prospective students before results day to discuss their options and potentially give them an offer of a place. They will also receive a phone call on August 18 to talk through options available to them at the University of Derby.

The University is also operating a Clearing Hotline on 01332 592016 which is taking calls now, and will be open for visits from August 18 onwards.
