Banks Mill Studios celebrates 20 years

16 September 2019

Banks Mill Studios, one of the University of Derby’s incubation centres specialising in the creative industries, is celebrating 20 years of providing space and support for businesses in Derby.

Over the last two decades, Banks Mill Studios has supported more than 382 businesses, 135 of which being University of Derby graduates.

The building, which now supports 72 tenants and members, was officially opened on 1 October 1999 by Dr Michael Porter, a renowned UK and international artist who has won numerous major awards; including an Honorary Doctor in Fine Art Award by the University of Derby.

Banks Mill Studios, formerly a rope and tarpaulin factory owned by the Banks family, was refurbished and remodelled into working studios with support from Southern Derbyshire Chamber, English Partnerships and the University of Derby who own the building.

To celebrate the milestone, Banks Mill Studios is hosting an Open Studios event in November, where members of the public will be given the opportunity to see work from 50 different artists, designers, makers and creative services providers.

“At the event you can see how our artists create their unique designs and products as well as buy original work, something that can't be experienced on the high street. You can meet a creative service provider to discuss how they can work with you. We are delighted to be celebrating this milestone and invite you to celebrate with us.”

The free Open Studios event will open on Friday 22 November from 5-8pm and will continue on Saturday 23 November and Sunday 24 November from 10am-5pm. Entry also includes a children’s art trail as well as a prize draw.
