£300k awarded to Derby for new apprenticeships in Midwifery, Physiotherapy and Social Work

Five new degree apprenticeships to educate the workforce of the future and boost healthcare and social work are being launched in Derby.

The apprenticeships will be delivered by the University of Derby after it was awarded more than £300,000 funding by the Office for Students. 

A funding competition was launched by the Office for Students to grow capacity and capability among English higher education providers to deliver high quality degree apprenticeships that meet skills needs now and in the future.

The funding will support the development of Level 6 degree apprenticeships at Derby in Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Midwifery, Social Work, and Youth Work.

Dr Denise Baker, Pro Vice-Chancellor Dean of the College of Health, Psychology and Social Care at the University of Derby, said:

“Derby was an early innovator in health apprenticeships and we are delighted to be recognised as a hub of excellence in health and care delivery. We are committed to providing opportunities for people to progress and enjoy rewarding careers.”

These programmes will meet the increasing demand for skilled professionals in vital sectors, equipping learners with the expertise and practical experience they need to excel in their careers.

Dr Denise Baker added:

“This expansion of our degree apprenticeship portfolio is essential to meet the requirements of the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan and needs of the health and social care sector.

“We pride ourselves as being an industry-engaged university, working collaboratively with organisations to produce a pipeline of talent of graduates who are equipped to deal with the challenges of the future.”

Some of the funding will support the University’s Prosthetics and Orthotics degree apprenticeship programme, an initiative which underscores the University’s commitment to specialised healthcare education, addressing the growing need for skilled practitioners in this critical field.

Claire Morley, Head of Skills and Apprenticeships at the University, added:

“This is a substantial investment in the future of healthcare and social work education, enabling the University to develop new apprenticeships in key areas.

“We are thrilled to receive this funding from the Office for Students. It reflects our ongoing commitment to providing top-tier education and training in healthcare and social work.

“These new apprenticeships will benefit our students and make a significant impact on the quality of healthcare and social services in our communities.”

The degree apprenticeships will commence delivery in the 2024-2025 academic year.
