Nina-Jane's journey to becoming a strategic leader

Nina-Jane Turner is based in the UK and has worked in finance since leaving school. She has over 20 years of experience in finance working across a broad range of industries and roles, initially starting her career in credit management.

‘I started out in finance as a wonderful female leader convinced me it was a good career path for me. To round off my qualifications and experience, I completed an Accounting and Finance BA (Hons) in 2019, graduating with a First with the University of Derby. After having such a great experience at Derby I decided to stay with us and study a MSc in Strategic Management, graduating with a distinction.’

Taking her career in new directions

Nina-Jane chose to study the Strategic Management MSc to broaden her overall business understanding to move her career into other areas of business from her accounting background. She says:

‘I take pride in being an inspiration for my children to strive to do the best that they can. I’m always trying to personally develop and grow. I have a real drive to succeed in everything I do.’

Nina-Jane shares some top tips for studying Online and shares her experiences studying Online at Derby. 

A diverse and engaging Masters degree

Studying the programme widened Nina-Jane’s understanding of corporate business and international organisations. This course also allowed her to explore a wide range of areas including sustainability, marketing, leadership, strategy and decision making.

‘Studying online with the University of Derby is very rewarding. The systems are easy to access on any device. The library is full of accessible research and the tutors are experts in their field. During the process I met and worked with people from around the world and this created a more fulfilling experience. It is exceptionally rewarding to complete any study, but this was by far the most diverse and interesting qualification I have gained.’

Reaching new heights

Since studying with Derby, Nina-Jane has become a strategic leader and broadened her range of employment opportunities.

‘The MSc Strategic Management also offered a dual accreditation with ILM. My dissertation was focused on the competitive advantage of female leadership. This enabled me to recognise my passion in this area and I am now co-chair of our global female affinity group. I am focusing on my career and putting the skills I have gained to good use.’
