Jayne Wimbleton takes her skills and passion to inspire the next generation of Nurses

Jayne wanted to progress in her career, but to achieve the promotion she aspired for, she had to gain a degree qualification. Overcoming any reservations she might have had about returning to education, Jayne went on to achieve a First-class Honours degree.

A lifelong career in Nursing

Jayne was born in Manchester and trained as a Nurse in Park Hospital, Urmston in 1983, moving to Chesire Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport in 1999. She has worked in Medicine, Intensive Care, Endoscopy, Ophthalmology and Outpatients – and is now a sister at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust.

'My Nana inspired me to go into nursing. I had struggled with school, but my Nana saw how caring I was, how I looked after my family, and suggested I would make a good nurse.’

The benefits of studying online

Jayne’s daughter started studying her degree in 2020, and inspired her to try for herself. She found that studying online with the University of Derby was very flexible. She could fit studying around my family and work commitments. From her course, Jayne has developed a strong understanding of evidence-based practice that she can utilise at work.

‘When I started studying, I gained so much confidence as a person. I had some excellent support from the tutors. The course had a brilliant choice of modules. There were lots of online videos and teaching sessions that I was able to book onto.’

Tips for studying online

To make the most out of studying, Jayne recommends ‘don't fall behind with the units, ask the tutors or online help groups at the earliest opportunity if you don't understand something.’
