CAD Presentation, Integration and Visualisation

The way CAD (Computer-aided design) and Building Information Modelling (BIM) designs are displayed and presented across the industry is quickly evolving. This 20 credit course aims to enhance your proficiency in presenting and integrating CAD designs with various visualisation techniques. You will cover the entire workflow from design to integration with visualisation tools such as augmented reality and virtual reality platforms. As well as learning how to communicate design ideas and critically evaluate presentation mediums, emerging technologies, collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, and communicate solutions to diverse audiences.

The course focuses on the core principles of BIM and visualising designs through varying tools and technologies, including more traditional methods of data presentation alongside newer technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and specialised visualisation software, and cover topics such as:

How you will learn

The course seeks to offer you a dynamic and interactive learning environment where you can develop your skills through a combination of tutor-led instruction, peer collaboration and independent practice.

There is a focus on learning by engagement and interactions and reflecting on your experience to help advance your critical thinking skills. You will learn in a hands on environment, working on real-world projects.

You will be encouraged to share your experiences and learn from each other. This will also help you to build connections and support each other throughout your careers. Once you have finished the course you will be able to communicate effectively within multidisciplinary teams. 

How you will be assessed

The assessment methods are coursework based, including an individual project based portfolio showcasing work completed on a specified design, and an assignment.

This course is designed to provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to enhance your career and focus on the knowledge, skills and competencies required within a wide variety of roles within industry.

The module content and assessment strategies are designed so that they are closely aligned with current industry standards and practices, ensuring that you acquire skills that are immediately applicable in professional settings. Students who complete the course will be well prepared to address the skills and knowledge required by employers in the built environment sector.

You may also decide to extend your studies by registering for a full master’s level qualification within Computer Aided Design, Building Information Modelling, Civil Engineering and Construction or Architecture programmes.

Additional information about your studies

The duration of the course is one semester.

Teaching hours

Like most universities, we operate extended teaching hours at the University of Derby, so contact time with your lecturers and tutors could be anytime between 9am and 9pm. Your timetable will usually be available on the website 24 hours after enrolment on to your course.
