A Mathematical Journey: From infinities and fractals, to real-world applications and maths support for all

Inaugural lecture: Professor Ovidiu Bagdasar

Mathematics is a universal language that helps us understand infinities and enables success in our daily lives. In this Inaugural Lecture, Professor Ovidiu Bagdasar will take you on a journey through pure mathematics, its applications to real-world problems, and pedagogic innovations designed to support learners at the University of Derby and beyond.

Often referred to as the "queen of sciences," mathematics is celebrated for its beauty, clarity, and precision, as well as its practical applications in science, technology, and everyday life. Professor Bagdasar will first explore how mathematics acts as a subtle language, bringing abstract concepts like infinity, dimension, and fractals to life with elegance and precision.

He will then highlight transdisciplinary research at the intersection of mathematics and data science, covering topics such as dynamic geometries in the complex plane, partitions, convexity, and mathematical modeling in diverse areas—ranging from traffic patterns and ceramics color design to the disruption of criminal networks.

Finally, Professor Bagdasar will showcase pedagogic innovative approaches to mathematics education at Derby. These initiatives are informed by research into maths anxiety, data science, and AI, and bring together academics, students, EdTech companies, and international partners, who develop and leverage cutting-edge technologies to achieve a shared vision: “a world where everyone enjoys maths.”

Professor Ovidiu Bagdasar

Professor Ovidiu Bagdasar, FIMA, SFHEA, joined the University of Derby in 2012 as a Lecturer in Mathematics. He is now the International Lead of the School of Computing, and co-ordinates maths support within Develop@Derby. Ovidiu holds dual PhDs in Pure and Applied Mathematics and conducts research spanning mathematics, data science, and maths education. Collaborating with colleagues, students, and industry partners, he is dedicated to enhancing student outcomes and advancing University KPIs through maths support and research.
