Orgreave: The Service Speaks video transcript

[We begin with Tom Andrews starting with the Intro and background. Tom speaks as information questions appear throughout.]

Hi, I'm Tom Andrews at the University of Derby, and I'm one of the researchers on the Orgreave - The Service Speaks oral history project. I'm here to explain a little bit about what the project is and why we'd like you to potentially get involved. So our aim is part the University of Derby, the University of Warwick and funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council, is to record the voices of police officers who were involved in the so-called Battle of Orgreave at the Orgreave Coking Plant in 1984. The reason that we want to do this is because we feel that the story of the police officers involved is one that hasn't been told up until this point.

[Who do we want to speak to?]

So what we want to hear from is the police officers that were there on the ground at the time. The aim of the project, ultimately, is to record these oral histories and your experiences as the police officers that were there.

[What happens to the recording?]

They’ll be ultimately stored in the British Library. In agreement with your terms and conditions about when they can be released.

[What will happen after?]

So the ultimate aim is to take your stories as part of a traveling exhibition to different police museums across the country, and also various other interactive events.

[What's involved?]

So the procedure, if you want to be involved is one of the researchers on the team. Either myself is Tom Andrews, my colleagues, Professor Kate Moss, Jenny Richards from the University of Derby, or Doctor Emily Gray from the University of Warwick. We'll come to a location that's convenient for you, with our audio recording equipment. We will get you to sign some disclosure notices, and then we'll just have a conversation about your experiences of the day. We will take those experiences as you want to relay them. And we may ask you some questions about clarification of different issues, but this is very much your interview that you will be in control of over the ultimate decision over what happens to that recording.

[How do I get involved?]

If you want to get involved. You can either click the QR code at the end of this video, or you can contact us at orgreave@derby.ac.uk. That's by email to Orgreave@derby.ac.uk. We very much look forward to hearing from you and should you have any questions then please get in touch with us and we will get back to you as soon as we can. Thank you very much.
