Residing in a town near Edinburgh, Scotland, Alasdair harbours ambitions of advancing within the university’s career service and eventually moving into the consulting sector. His academic journey began with an undergraduate degree in Music Technology and Innovation, before moving to complete his master’s 8 years later.

Professionally, he aims to leverage his experience to enhance career services, aspiring to lead such services at a university level before transitioning into consulting. On a personal level, he is driven by a passion for personal development and a desire to grow his career with a deep commitment to both personal growth and advocacy for others.

Originally from Leicester, Alasdair’s career journey has been marked by a blend of academic pursuits and practical experience. He started his professional path in data roles within career services, which fuelled his interest in the sector. This interest led him to pursue further education to deepen his expertise and enhance his career prospects. Alasdair’s choice to enter the field of careers services was driven by a genuine interest in personal development and a desire to contribute meaningfully to others’ career journeys.

During his studies, Alasdair was a full-time student, completing his degree in two years, attending lectures on Saturdays and working part time in Birmingham during his master's program. This balancing act was a testament to his commitment to integrating academic learning with practical career advancement. The master's program aligned perfectly with his aspirations, providing him with a professional qualification and deepening his engagement with the careers sector.

Alasdair took a significant academic hiatus between his undergraduate and master’s studies. This break, while challenging, allowed him to approach his master's program with fresh perspectives. The program at the University of Derby marked a considerable step up from his undergraduate experience, demanding a higher level of critical thinking. Alasdair found the program's design particularly accommodating for those returning to academia, with a supportive structure that gently reintroduced him to academic rigor and literature engagement. The lecturers played a crucial role in this transition, offering substantial support and fostering an environment conducive to learning.

 Choice of University

Alasdair chose the University of Derby over other institutions, such as Warwick, due to the distinct emphasis on deep thought and research focus that Derby offered. His interactions with Derby’s lecturers during the open day provided a unique depth and engagement that he did not find elsewhere, solidifying his decision to enrol.

Since joining the master's program, Alasdair has achieved notable career milestones. He has secured four different roles within the careers sector, each benefiting from the enhanced credibility and professional distinction his master's degree provided. Currently managing a placement team in the Business School at Edinburgh, Alasdair has honed his ability to engage in strategic conversations, network effectively, and contribute to research initiatives.

Personal and Professional Development

The small, conversational nature of his course at Derby, with only 20-30 participants, fostered an engaging and collaborative learning environment. This setting facilitated rich discussions and personalized interactions, contributing significantly to his personal and professional growth. Alasdair values the critical thinking skills and strategic insights gained from the course, which have been instrumental in his career development.

Alasdair advises new students to approach their studies with a critical mindset, actively engaging with their career development. He emphasizes the importance of gaining career-based work experience and being well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities that masters study presents. His journey underscores the importance of balancing academic pursuits with practical experience and the value of engaging deeply with one’s field of interest.
