About

I joined the University in September 2022. My background is with health sciences and nursing, and I am in the World’s top 2% of scientists (Oncology) as per Stanford University list (2021).

I have worked through all academic ranks from Lecturer (University of Liverpool) to Senior Lecturer (University of Nottingham) to Reader and then Professor (University of Manchester). Followed by Chair Professor and Head of School for a decade at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

I have secured more than £10 million pounds of research funding from competitive sources (ie. DoH; NCRI; NIHR RfPB; Marie Curie Cancer Care etc) in the UK and Hong Kong (Health & Medical research Fund; Health Bureau) plus international collaborative grants. I have more than 350 publications, and an h-index of H-index of (Aug 2022): 51 (WoS) or 77 (Google Scholar) [Aug 2022], having the highest h-index in my profession in the UK, and the top 10 internationally. Some of the publications are in prestigious journals like Lancet, Lancet Oncology or Journal of Clinical Oncology.

I have done consultancies with the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Cambodia, Fiji and Philippines, developed reports for WHO on rural ageing services and contributed to WHO policy documents (ie. on COVID-19 and long-term care facilities) and I have been Director of a WHO Collaborating centre for a decade. I am Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Oncology Nursing since January 2003 (this is one of only four international peer-reviewed cancer nursing journals. Impact factor of 2.398), and Editor of special issues in Frontiers in Oncology (with Impact factor of 6.244). I have also graduated more than 20 PhD students and attracted funding for and supervised several post-doc fellows. I am executive board member ins several international professional societies and associations.

I have or had Visiting/Honorary/Adjunct Professorships in the below institutions:

In terms of leadership, as a Head of School and Dean of Nursing in my last position, I managed to move the school in and up the international rankings. Within 4 years from starting my headship the school became a listed school in the specialty QS ranking, entering as 43 in the world (2017), moving up to number 31 in 2020. In summer 2022, The Shanghai International ranking put as at number 21 in the world.

Other achievements include:

Teaching responsibilities

Professional interests

I am a Registered Nurse with further training in counselling; integrative health and acupuncture; and lymphedema therapy. I have a strong and active research profile that I will continue in my PVC/Dean role through current and new external grants, supervision of PhD students and directing programmes of research within Arts and Health.

My health background in a College of Arts, Humanities and Education will allow me to work with colleagues across Colleges and the University alongside my strong national and international network of collaborators. I am strong proponent of inter- and trans-disciplinary work.

I am board member of international societies and I am involved or leading on the development or updates of international clinical guidelines on cancer symptoms. I am involved as board member with many journals. I provide consultation to government agencies internationally or chair external review boards on department/school wide academic evaluations.

I am also part of an international consortium on research (lead University of Malmo where I act as international consultant). I review research grant applications for many agencies (incl. in UK, HK, Australia, Canada, South Africa), and I have been chairman of review panels for the Health and Medical Research Fund in Hong Kong for several years. I have been global advisor for several industry partners. I have been board member in NHS Trust committees.

I have also worked to attract donation both for research and for student support initiatives (and I have secured to date more than the equivalent of £3M). I have led and organised multiple international conferences. I am often invited around the globe to talk about both education and practice related topic, and I have delivered many key note speeches and invited talks in international conferences over the years.

Research interests

My research interests are around art and health, particularly how therapeutic art can improve symptoms in cancer an palliative care patients.

Supportive and palliative care, with more focus on symptom management and developing non-pharmacological interventions. Key symptom foci include:

  1. Work on Chemotherapy-induced Nausea and Vomiting (CINV)

Impact:

The risk prediction model study for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) led to the development of a website and an app for use by clinicians to calculate CINV risk in patients before chemotherapy begins (www.riskcinv.org ) and is hosted by an industry partner (Helsinn Pharma; released in late 2018). Usability data of this new online tool show that a significant number of clinicians across several countries are using it. Further to this online risk assessment tool, our team developed a number of symptom management tools including the antiemesis scale (MAT) which is now available on Apple store as an app (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mascc-antiemesis-tool-mat/id536500719?mt=8  ), and as an android app in Google Play supported by Merck & Co. These apps are available free-of-charge for use by clinicians to aid clinical decision-making and improve communication with patients. The MAT is also used as a primary outcome measure in a large number of international antiemetic trials and observational studies (as per www.clinicaltrial.gov information), including currently in USA, France, Italy and international trials being translated in 16 languages (https://www.mascc.org/mat ). The research on anticipatory nausea in chemotherapy patients and the risk factor research have also been used in the Antiemetic Guidelines of the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) and the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) in 2016 (societies with a combined membership of >5,000 clinicians). Use/uptake of antiemetic guidelines according to several studies is around 30%, suggesting that at least one-third of chemotherapy patients in western countries have improved antiemetic control as a result of these guidelines.

Impact:

Our work has been incorporated in the UK’s NICE guidance on ‘Melanoma: assessment and treatment’ (2015). In addition, our work on cough related to lung cancer has been embedded into the 2017 guidelines on lung cancer of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), which has been highly cited. Cough is present in 85% and is a distressing symptom in 65% of the 2 million people diagnosed with lung cancer in the world each year. These CHEST guidelines have wide reach, not only to the 50,000 chest physicians receiving the Chest Journal and the CHEST guidelines open-access website where this is also listed, but also by endorsement (as stated in the journal website) by the following societies: American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology; American Thoracic Society; Asian Pacific Society of Respirology; Canadian Thoracic Society; Irish Thoracic Society.

Impact

As a result of our clinical trials of acupuncture (ie. ref.2 and two others from the team) have been included in the clinical guidelines of the International (29 countries) Society for Integrative Oncology] reaching more than 1,000 society members and a large number through the open-access publication. The same reference is listed under the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre’s ‘Acupuncture’ service, as part of the evidence presented to patients. Ref 3 is further included in the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) antiemetic guidelines, reaching its >50,000 members and a strong advocacy service-user group, as well as USA’s National Guideline Clearing House, Agency of Healthcare Research & Quality. Also, our related work has been incorporated in patient information websites and professional websites such as that of the USA Oncology Nursing Society accessed by >10,000 members. Our work also has been used as patient information leaflets from the USA National Cancer Institute. The National Cancer Institute in USA has cited our work in its Physician Data Query series on ‘Acupuncture’, a comprehensive source of cancer information available to clinicians and patients worldwide through its open-access document. Reference 1 was used as part of the evidence submitted by the Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine & Health in the USA to the USA’s Department of Health & Human Services, on the latter’s consultation for the management of pain in adults. Since then key recommendations were adopted in all hospitals in the US. Reference 5 is key to the clinical guidelines of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in their latest update for the management of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, as is ref. 4 for ASCO’s clinical guidelines for the management of dyspnea in advanced cancer patients.
