About

I am an Associate Professor in Learning, Teaching and Pedagogy at the University of Derby.

I am a qualified HCPC registered Diagnostic Radiographer. Before joining the University I worked as a Diagnostic Radiographer in the NHS for approximately 10 years, specialising in CT and MRI scanning. I started working at the University as a Lecturer in Diagnostic Radiography in 2006, progressing up to Senior Lecturer, Assistant Subject Head, I then managed the Diagnostic Imaging, Operating Department Practice and Osteopathy discipline area for 9 years. Since June 2022, I have been an Associate Professor in Learning, Teaching and Pedagogy.

In 2020, I was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by Advance HE. This award recognised the impact that I have had on learning & teaching approaches, integrating simulation into the curricula of diagnostic imaging programmes, expanding clinical placement capacity, and supporting and nurturing a research culture at the University of Derby.

I am passionate about Person-Centred Care and have undertaken a number of research projects looking at different aspects of this within my profession of diagnostic radiography. I have disseminated this research widely via peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and presentations at conferences and study days. I am an associate member of the International Community of Practice for Person-Centred Research. In January 2022 I started the role of Clinical Director for the Personalised Care Institute

As well as my Associate Professor role here at Derby, I am President of the UKIO congress for 2024 and 2025. I am also a member of the College of Radiographers Research Advisory Group, an Associate Editor of the 'Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences', a mentor for the FoRMM (Formal Radiography Research Mentorship) scheme run by the College of Radiographers, a mentor for the Council of Deans for Health 150 Student Leaders scheme, and a peer reviewer for the 'Radiography' journal.

Research interests

Since moving into education I have developed a passion for research, and in particular for research which improves patient care and student education. This has led to a number of different projects looking at areas such as student transition to clinical placement, students' experience of dealing with very ill patients, the use of non-traditional placements, and person-centred care.

I completed my PhD by Published Works in 2021. In 2017, I was awarded funding from the College of Radiographers Industry Partnership scheme to carry out a large research project to define informed measures of patient-centred care. This project was at the centre of my PhD work.

My supervisors were Professor Dawn Forman, Professor Kathryn Mitchell, and Professor Chris Brannigan.

Experience in industry

I worked as a Diagnostic Radiographer in the NHS for ten years before moving into higher education. My specialist area of radiography practice was CT and MRI scanning. During my clinical time, I worked at Nottingham City Hospital, Derbyshire Royal Infirmary, and Leicester Royal Infirmary.

I have been working in higher education since 2006, and have a proven track record of delivering high quality learning and teaching, as well as managing academic teams.

I was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship from Advance HE in recognition of my contribution to learning and teaching in 2020.

In the media

International experience

In April 2023, I was invited speaker at the Australian Society of Medical Imaging & Radiation Therapy conference, held in Sydney. I presented a keynote lecture about my research into person-centred care in diagnostic radiography and ran a workshop about delivering person-centred care in imaging and radiotherapy services. As part of the conference, I was profiled in: “Your everyday was my worst day”: conference puts patient-centred care in focus – Croakey Health Media by Marie McInerney April 2023

In November 2023 I attended the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) annual congress in Chicago, USA in my capacity as President of the UK Imaging & Oncology congress (UKIO) for 2024 and 2025. I used my time at RSNA to meet with industry partners from across the imaging and oncology sector, network with international colleagues, pick up hints, tips and ideas to use to inform the planning of UKIO and meet with key stakeholders of UKIO.

In February 2024 I was an invited speaker at the European Congress of Radiology, held in Vienna, Austria. I presented a keynote lecture about my research into person-centred care in diagnostic radiography and networked with colleagues from education, clinical practice and industry partners. I also used the opportunity to pick up hints, tips and ideas to use to inform the planning of UKIO.

Teaching responsibilities

My teaching responsibilities relate primarily to my interests in pedagogic practice, research-informed teaching, person-centred care and universal personalised care. I also teach communication, professionalism, leadership and governance.

I have authored two MOOC's (Massive Open Online Courses) based on my research interests in person-centred care:
