James Taylor

Assistant Head of Discipline - Public Health and Social Care Senior Lecturer in Social and Community Studies/ Public Health

Teaching responsibilities

The key subjects that I teach are Critical Appraisal and Research Skills and Introduction to Health Promotion and Health Improvement, these are modules that align with my practical and teaching experience and are part of the Masters in Public Health and the Masters in Leadership for Health and Social Care programmes.

Research interests

My main research interests lay within the utilisation of physical activity as a tool to improve Public Health, this includes the wider considerations of health promotion within educational environments, health inequalities and social justice. My active research is exploring staff perceptions of the promotion of physical activity within further education colleges. This demonstrates my qualitative approach to research, and both embeds philosophical theories and aims to inform practice. In addition, my research into the stigma surrounding fitness professionals working within a social prescribing world is at very early stages. However, both research topics allow me to find the correlation between Public Health and the world of sport, fitness, and physical activity, thus, aligning my personal and professional interests.

Experience in industry

My early work as a community sports coordinator started my journey working in a community health space. This provided me with experience working within community settings and using participation in sports as a tool to get children active. Following this, my work as a personal trainer and then an exercise and lifestyle coach enabled me to work with individuals with non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases. Within this role, the use of physical activity and nutritional guidance helped me support individuals who were referred y their GP. Moreover, this role extended to fall prevention work using strength, balance, and coordination training. The experience gained within this role has allowed me to continue to provide such services on a 1-2-1 freelance basis, through ad hoc, the continuation allows my industry practice to remain current.

My teaching career started delivering health and fitness qualifications within different communities' settings across England, this allowed me to experience different cultures and perspectives on health and healthcare. These experiences led to me being an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Champion, which is something I continue to be involved in.

Currently, I am working with community health companies as a consultant and advisor for health promotion activities using physical activity and nutrition for the reduction of health inequalities.
