About

I am a Professor of Operations Management and Head of the Centre for Supply Chain Improvement at the University of Derby. As a leading academic, I have led and managed international research projects funded by the European Commission, British Academy, Innovate UK, British Council and Mexico’s National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT).

I have published extensively, close to 400 papers, in leading scientific journals and conferences as well as nine books in the areas of operations management and innovation, digital transformation to enhance operations, manufacturing performance measurement, continuous improvement, and quality management systems. I am Co-founder and current Editor of the Int. Journal of Supply Chain and Operations Resilience, Associate Editor of the Int. Journal of Production and Operations Management, Associate Editor of the Journal of Manufacturing Technology Management, Editor-in-Chief of the Int. Journal of Industrial Engineering and Operations Management, Associate Editor of the IET Collaborative Intelligent Manufacturing and Associate Editor of the IIMBG Journal of Sustainable Business and Innovation. I have also guest-edited and led a number of special issues for journals such as Production Planning & Control, Technology Forecasting and Social Change, Supply Chain Management: An International Journal, Journal of Manufacturing Technology Management, Int. Journal of Quality and Reliability Management, TQM Journal, Int. Journal of Lean Six Sigma, among others. I have also been invited to deliver over 30 keynote speeches in international conferences, e.g. IEOM 2018 in Bandung, Indonesia, POMS 2018 and ICSBE 2018 in Kandy, Sri Lanka, ICIBM 2020 in Dehradun, India, IEOM 2023 in Manila, Philippines, SOM 2023 in Shillong, India, RAISE 2023 in Vellore, India, among others. I have received prestigious awards such as the ‘Outstanding Researcher Award’, ‘Outstanding Professor in Supply Chain and Logistics Award’ and the ‘Fellowship Status’ granted by the Society of Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM).

For 5 years in a row (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2025) I have been ranked amongst the most highly-cited scientists in the world, according to research by Elsevier and Stanford University.

In 2025 and 2024, I was ranked, in the field of Business and Management, as a ‘Leader’ and in 2022 as a ‘Raising Star’ by Research.com. Beyond academic circles, my work has been used to shape policy documents produced by the European Commission, World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, The British Academy as well as policy documents issued by various governments, e.g. UK, Finland, Sweden, Canada, Spain and Iraq, contributing in this way to policy formulation and real-world decision-making.
