About

With over 23 years of experience in education, I bring a depth of expertise to my role as Course Leader for the University of Derby’s innovative Postgraduate Certificate in Online Teaching (PGCOT). I am dedicated to preparing educators for the evolving landscape of digital and hybrid learning environments, combining practical experience with a forward-thinking approach to online pedagogy. My work is grounded in developing accessible, research-informed strategies that enable students to thrive as online educators and leaders in digital education.

Teaching responsibilities

I lead and teach across postgraduate and undergraduate programs, with a particular focus on the PGCOT, School based teacher training routes and the iPGCE. My teaching emphasises the integration of theory and practice, allowing students to apply what they learn to their own educational settings. By modelling best practices in online teaching, I ensure that students not only gain skills in effective online pedagogy but also experience first hand the impact of inclusive and engaging digital education.

Professional interests

My professional interests focus on advancing online and hybrid education, innovative pedagogical practices, and promoting inclusivity in digital learning environments. I am particularly passionate about preparing educators to become not only teachers but also “edupreneurs” capable of creating impactful online content, engaging diverse learners, and contributing to the future of digital education.

Research interests

My research interests lie at the intersection of human and machine, particularly how the interaction between humans and generative AI can aid development of online pedagogy, digital accessibility, and the development of inclusive, engaging online learning environments. Another key area of interest is the role of educational technology in fostering active engagement and community among remote learners, as well as the potential for AI and adaptive learning tools to personalise and improve the online teaching experience.

I am also exploring the emerging concept of “teacherpreneurs” in digital education—educators who leverage online platforms to create and share educational content independently. Through this work, I aim to contribute to a body of knowledge that supports educators not only in developing effective digital teaching practices but also in innovating and leading within the expanding field of online and hybrid education.

Membership of professional bodies

As a member of the Chartered College of Teaching, I am committed to promoting high standards within the teaching profession. This affiliation supports my ongoing dedication to quality and innovation in online teacher education.

Qualifications

Experience in industry

Prior to teaching, I was a software engineer working in the nuclear and electricity distribution industries.

Additional interests and activities

Away from work I'm an avid supporter of Derby County FC and play Fantasy Premier League in competition with my two sons and stepdaughters. Obviously I gain advantage by utilising statistics and AI prediction.
