About

I am a serving Chief Inspector with Nottinghamshire Police with 27 years' service, currently seconded to the University of Derby. I have extensive policing experience in the advanced public order command of spontaneous and pre-planned public order/public safety events as well as pre-planned Tactical Firearms Command.

I have an adaptive and considerate style which promotes a culture that values diversity and encourages challenge, with a proven record in taking personal responsibility for seeing events through to satisfactory conclusions. I encourage and support learning with colleagues and am well versed in managing relationships and partnerships for the long term, sharing information and building trust. Creating joined up, cross boundary solutions, through effective partnership working and robust and flexible decision-making is something that I have proven experience in.

I am currently the MSc programme lead for Police Leaderhsip, Strategy and Organisation and recently successfully led a University of Derby licensing application through the stringent College of Policing Quality Standards Assessment (QSA) process in relation to the UK's first accelerated two-year pre join degre route in policing.

I secured my Doctorate in Policing, Security and Community Safety in 2017 and as the Nottinghamshire Police lead for Evidence-Based Practice for several years, I maintain an interest in and commitment to driving research and innovation in policing, linking academic expertise with policing priority, and facilitating the co-production of research that is useful and relevant to policing practice.

Teaching responsibilities

I have teaching responsibilities at both undergraduate and post-graduate level, focusing on evidence-based practice, policing partnerships and community engagement.

Research interests

As the lead for Evidence-Based Practice for many years within Nottinghamshire Police, I maintain a professional interest in police-related research or 'what works' in policing. I have experience in researching police engagement with young people and am currently undertaking research into the recruitment and retention of detectives in UK policing as well as measuring the impact of applied research in policing.
