Accepted your offer

What next?

We're delighted that you've accepted your offer to study at the University of Derby. We’ll keep in touch to let you know what’s happening in the run-up to joining us in September, and you can also join our Facebook group at facebook.com/derbyuni which is just for our offer holders, so you can start to make friends and join in conversations before you get here in.

What happens when

February to April: some subjects will be running taster sessions for applicants. We really recommend you book a place if you haven’t already - check dates and availability for your subject.

Other courses (particularly in the Arts) will invite you for interviews to assess portfolios. During the interview you will also have the opportunity to tour the facilities at Markeaton Street and to visit accommodation.

February to July: come and explore our campus if you’ve not already been to Derby, Buxton or Chesterfield. You can join one of our monthly Campus Tours at Derby, or we can arrange a visit for you at Buxton or Chesterfield.

Accommodation

Now you have accepted your offer, you should start looking at where you might live.

Our halls of residence are ideally located a short distance from your lectures and within easy reach of the city centre – so you’ll soon be finding your way around and enjoying your home from home. Most first year students live in halls – they provide safe, good value accommodation. Your rent is all-inclusive, so you’ll have no separate bills to sort out.

If you’d prefer to rent a private property, we can help you find the right place through our registered private housing scheme. Together with the Council and the landlord, we assess all the properties registered so you can be confident they’ll be safe and comfortable.

Money

If you are funding your studies yourself you can apply for a tuition fee loan from the Student Loans Company. It’s quick and secure to apply online. You won’t make any repayments until you have graduated and your salary has reached a specified level. The tuition fee loan will cover your fees, and you can apply for a maintenance loan to cover your living costs.

You may also want to start thinking about how to manage your money and ways to top-up your income through part-time work.

Results Day

If your offer is conditional (ie dependent on gaining specific grades in your forthcoming exams), UCAS will notify us of your results.

Once we receive your results, we will aim to make a decision as quickly as possible. If you meet the terms of your offer, your place will be confirmed automatically and UCAS track will be updated within a few days.

If you don’t gain the grades you were expecting, try not to worry. We may still be able to offer you a place on your chosen course. Check UCAS track to see if you have been accepted. However, if you have been unsuccessful in gaining a place on the course you have applied for, we would still recommend contacting us as we may be able to offer an alternative course.

Supporting you

The Union of Students can provide help and advice on a variety of issues, and the University also operates a Student Wellbeing Service offering a wide range of support from health and personal issues, to finance worries and academic study support. Contact us before you enrol to find out how we can help.

Preparing to go to university

You can read more about academic preparation, making friends before you get here and top tips on our Preparing to go to University pages.

Union of Students

You’ll automatically become a member of the Union of Students when you register as a student in September. Union of Students has offices at both our Derby and Buxton Campuses and their role is to make sure you have the best possible experience here.

Led by students, you’ll find there are lots of ways to get involved – you might want to be a programme rep for your course, represent a specific group of students, or set up your own club or society.

Your first few weeks will be fast-paced and packed with new information and chances to socialise.
