Terms and conditions

  1. The promoter is: the University of Derby of Kedleston Road, Derby DE22 1GB. 
  2. There is no entry fee to enter this competition but all entrants must be within the appropriate age range set out above (16-24 year olds, as of 15 June 2023).
  3. To enter, please complete the website form.
  4. Closing date for entry will be 18 August 2023. After this date no further entries to the competition will be permitted.
  5. Entries which are posted or emailed shall not be deemed to have been received. No responsibility can be accepted for entries not received for whatever reason.
  6. The University of Derby reserves the right to cancel or amend the competition and these terms and conditions where it becomes necessary to do so. Any changes to the competition will be notified to entrants as soon as possible by the University.
  7. The prize is a cash prize of £1,000 for the winner. This is not transferable, and no financial alternative will be offered. In addition, the winner will be given the opportunity to work with a University of Derby academic to develop a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) linked to their winning idea. There will be an additional cash prize of £500 each for two runners up.

  9. Winners will be chosen by a panel of judges from the University of Derby, plus Gautam Malkani, Lead Commissioning Editor, Guardian Labs. 
  10. The University’s decision in respect of all matters to do with the competition will be final and no correspondence will be entered into
  11. The winner and their idea will be displayed on the University of Derby website and publicised to the media.
  12. The winner agrees to the use of their name and image in any publicity material for the sole purpose of identifying you as the author of your entry and/or as a winner of the competition. Any personal data relating to the winner or any other entrants will be used solely in accordance with current UK data protection legislation and will not be disclosed to a third party without the entrant’s prior consent.
  13. Entry into the competition will be deemed as acceptance by the entrant of these terms and conditions. The University of Derby reserves the right to refuse entry or to award the prize to any entrant who is in breach of these terms and conditions.
  14. The University of Derby accepts no responsibility for any damage, loss, liabilities, injury or disappointment incurred or suffered by you as a result of entering the competition or accepting the prize. The University of Derby further disclaims liability for any injury or damage to your or any other person’s computer relating to or resulting from participation in or downloading any materials in connection with the competition. 
  15. The competition and these terms and conditions will be governed by English law and any disputes will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England.
