Your guide to Applicant Experience Days

Your Applicant Experience Day is all about helping you decide whether the University of Derby is right for you. It is not just about seeing our excellent facilities and award-winning accommodation - it is about feeling the student experience. This guide will help you make the most of it. 

Plan your route to Derby

Have a good start to your day and plan ahead so you know exactly where you need to go. Derby is ideally located in the heart of the UK, with great transport links.

Your Applicant Experience Day with us will begin at our Kedleston Road site (DE22 1GB) which is located just outside the city centre and has free parking for our visitors. We have shuttle buses running throughout the day to our additional teaching sites and accommodation.

Travelling by bus? The Allestree bus takes you from the city centre to our Kedleston Road site in 10 minutes.

Travelling by train? Derby Midland train station is a 10 minute drive away from our Kedleston Road site. If you're travelling by train, we're operating a free bus from the Pride Park entrance to the station. Our team will be there to guide you - look our for the pink t-shirts/hoodies!

Travelling by coach? You can catch the National Express coach and get yourself a 30% discount on your return tickets to Derby bus station. Select your starting destination and departure date from the journey planner, and your discount will be automatically applied at checkout. From Derby bus station, you can catch the Trent Barton ‘Allestree’ service which runs frequently along Kedleston Road.

Attend your Welcome Talk

Upon arrival, you’ll receive a warm welcome to the event and our University from our friendly senior leadership team and helpful student ambassadors who will be on-hand to support and guide you. You can attend a Welcome Talk where you'll hear all about our University, the city and the opportunities that await you.

Visit our student accommodation

One of the best things about living in halls is the instant sense of community – that feeling of being surrounded by fellow students who have also just moved away from home. We can guarantee you a room in our award-winning halls if you make the University of Derby your first choice and apply for accommodation by 31 July. We have free buses running throughout the day to take you to our accommodation, so you can spend some time in your new home-from-home.

Take part in an interactive subject session to give you an in-depth understanding of your course and what your daily life will be like as a student here. Maps are available to help you locate where you need to go and our free shuttle buses will take you to our other teaching sites.

Navigating your way through the maze of student finance can be tricky, but our friendly Finance team are experts in supporting students and their families through the process. Experienced staff members will be present at our Applicant Experience Day and are ready to answer all your questions.

Find out what's next

In our OL1 lecture theatre at Kedleston Road, we have a panel of experts ready to answer any questions you may have about your journey to university. You can expert to learn more about student finance, accommodation options, the admissions process and our Union of Students. Use the interactive QR code on the screen to submit your questions and get instant live answers. This panel will start at 11:30am and 3:00pm.

Learn more about research

Research is a big part of university life at Derby, and there are lots of exciting opportunities to help our experts find vital solutions. On your campus tour, look out for the Aquatic Research Facility where Michael Sweet, our Professor of Ecology and Nature-based Solutions, is leading on globally recognised research into coral spawning.

Explore the campus, sites and facilities

Attending an Applicant Experience Day gives you the opportunity to explore your campus and get a feel for the student culture and atmosphere. 

Our friendly team of students are ready to take you on a walking tour of our campus and show you all of the facilities you can use - from the Basecamp social space, library, sports centre, and everything in-between. And who better to tell you what studying here is really like?
