With exciting developments such as sustainable buildings, clean energy, electric and automatic transport, engineering will give you the ability to be innovative, creative, flexible and at the forefront of future developments.

An innovative city

Derby is one of the cities where the industrial revolution was born. This innovation has stayed in the area as it's home to a collection of expert engineering companies like Rolls-Royce, Alstom and Toyota. Our connections to the industry are evident in our placement opportunities, industry visits and research.

The DUST project focuses on the transition of Derby's urban landscape towards a more environmentally sustainable future. The three-year project will lay the groundwork for the long-term development of Derby city and surrounding areas, addressing issues of climate change, human and natural habitat management, sustainable mobility and transport, and integrated connectivity that enhances the lived experience of the citizens of Derby.

In 2022, Rolls-Royce Submarines Ltd launched its Nuclear Skills Academy which was developed with partners including the University of Derby. The Academy is the first of its kind and aims to sustain nuclear capability within the UK’s submarines programme by creating a dedicated pipeline of talent at the start of their careers.

We have recently invested £13m in opening an East Midlands Institute of Technology (EM-IoT). The Institute - a collaboration between the University and Derby College Group, Loughborough University and Loughborough College - aims to create a highly advanced workforce needed to lead the digital revolution, otherwise known as Industry 4.0. Working with employers such as Rolls-Royce, National Grid ESO, Fujitsu and Bloc Digital, the Institute offers programmes from T-Levels through to postgraduate degrees, with the goal of making graduates part of a net zero carbon workforce.
