Event Management students organise festive fundraiser

Second year BA (Hons) Event Management students had the chance to put the skills they’ve learned on their course into practice by organising a festive masquerade ball. The students organised and delivered the annual College of Business, Law and Social Sciences Christmas event at The Derby Conference Centre as part of their Sustainable Event Operations module.

Bringing learning to life

Events like these provide students with invaluable practical experiences and allow them to apply their theory to practice; ensuring that the next generation of event professionals is well-equipped to address the challenges and opportunities of the events industry.

The Event Management students were involved in all aspects of the event, from designing the initial concept, to finance, logistics, marketing, sales, sponsorship, décor and theme, entertainment and risk management giving them the chance to put the theory studied on the course into practice.

Over 130 staff and students attended the event from across the University. Guests were treated to a welcome drink, two course Christmas dinner and live music from a current student and local DJ.

"Organising the Christmas party has really been a true learning curve and has taught me valuable skills in event planning, including effective teamwork, time management, and problem-solving. It has also enhanced my ability to communicate, plan and work effectively to ensure the event's success. An experience that I would truly not forget about and have really enjoyed the whole process even at tough times" - Jamie Swaffer, Event Management student.

This learning experience truly peaks the knowledge of events management and everything it really includes. Before this event there were many things I wouldn’t have thought of, but having to plan and play out an actual event really shows every step needed to be taken for the success of the event. I really found it helpful and eye opening being able to plan and deliver a real event.

Giving back

The students made the decision to run a charity raffle as part of the event in support of local charity, Children First Derby, who provide community-based support for children, families and young people across Derby and Derbyshire. The raffle raised £184 for the charity.

“On Thursday, December 5th, a group of students organised a Charity Masquerade Ball, generously donating their raffle proceeds to our cause. We would like to extend a heartfelt thanks for raising a total of £184.00 for us. The evening was enjoyable, featuring delightful laughter and great music. We truly appreciated the warm and welcoming atmosphere created by everyone involved.” – Children First Derby.

Alumni mentoring

The students were also supported by Samantha O’Neill, Marketing Manager at The Derby Conference Centre. Samantha graduated from BA (Hons) Event Management in 2020, networking with Derby Conference Centre as part of a mentorship programme before securing a role with the company upon graduation. Students were able to benefit from Samantha’s experience and support, as both an Event Management graduate and as a Marketing Manager in the events industry.
