How hands-on experience boosted Jonny's future career

Finding the right course

Jonny Beasley studied BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Derby, graduating in 2022. He then went on to complete a MSc in Applied Sport and Exercise Science in 2023. With a wealth of experience behind him, Jonny now works for the University of Derby’s Union of Students as part of Sport Development.

Jonny always knew he wanted to go to university but struggled to find the right course for him. After declining his place to study Primary Education in 2016 and working in the retail industry for several years, Jonny developed a keen interest in the gym. He became fascinated by the science behind what was happening to his muscles and body due to exercise. It was this that led the decision to study Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Derby.

Immersive experiences

Part of Jonny’s decision to study at the University of Derby was our continuous investment into sports facilities, including our £10.8 million Sports Centre which hosts a wealth of state-of-the-art equipment for students to use. During Jonny’s time with us, he spent significant time working within our Human Performance Unit, alongside the Physiology team delivering VO2 max tests and physical data testing for athletes.

After completing his undergraduate course, Jonny went straight into postgraduate study to further purse his passion. Jonny says, “I never looked anywhere else for master’s courses, as I knew that Derby would be the best place for me. Every academic I worked with was amazing. They dedicate so much time to helping their students”. Even through difficult moments, Jonny found that academic staff were always there to offer support. Conversations with lecturers and technicians left him feeling focused and inspired by new ideas.

While at university, Jonny interned in the Strength and Conditioning team, delivering programmes to scholars and performance teams. He also gained invaluable experience working with Burton Albion FC and Derby County Community Trust. Through this work, Jonny got headhunted for a role at Pro Football Support who deliver physical data testing batteries to category one football academies within the Premier League and English Football League.

Pathway to success

Jonny considers his time at university, his two degrees, and the experiences gained through placements, as some of his biggest successes. The variety of skills and knowledge gained by studying Sports Science has allowed Jonny to now work in Sport Development. His role involves the coordination of the British Universities and Colleges Sport programme for the University of Derby. He works closely with sports clubs to aid their development and increase participation in sport.

“Studying a degree has given me the skills needed to work within this field. The transferable skills built from practical modules has increased my confidence in myself and what I do. A lot of this stemmed from the support of the academics in pushing me to achieve the best I could.”

During his time as a student, Jonny built up a strong network of professional contacts who can support him throughout his career. With the hope of continuing his work in Sport Development, Jonny would like to “help grow participation and engagement in sports from the grassroots right through to high level performance”. He encourages those thinking about studying this course at the University of Derby to “absolutely do it! I had an amazing time. My key message would be to get involved in as much as you can with as many different people as you can. Work experience, volunteering and placements are one of the most important things you can do to set up a successful career in sport!”
